FAQs
Yes, teenagers 13+ are welcome to join my belly dance classes! ( I actually started at 18, and always wished I’d started earlier!)
Dance is a wonderful way for people of all ages to express themselves, stay active, and have fun while building confidence and self-esteem. I would also encourage mums to join with their daughters for a unique bonding experience! To ensure a positive environment for everyone, we ask that teenagers have parental consent and demonstrate the maturity to participate in an adult class setting. If you have any specific questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly.
Yes they can! Oriental dance is a wonderful non-competitive form of dance for kids that builds their coordination and confidence in a fun, supportive setting.
Because this dance is so great for kids, we’ve decided to take expressions of interest for kids classes with Sarah for 2023! Find out more here
April usually has hip scarves for sale through classes. You’ll find cheap hip scarves on eBay or AliExpress, but it can take some time for them to arrive from overseas. If you’d like to buy hip scarves from Australia, have a look on Facebook for costume exchange groups, or perhaps try searching Amera’s Palace, which is in Sydney and has some quality scarves available to buy online.
Group classes through April Oriental Dancer are usually held at Turramurra Recreation Centre, Highbury. Please check the timetable for current locations.
You can now also learn from me through The Dance Pad, with classes located in Marden. You can enrol for these classes via The Dance Pad.
All current available classes are 1 hour in duration.
Absolutely not! You’re welcome to if you feel comfortable, but showing your belly is actually not a requirement for bellydancing. Some people perform the dance in beautiful one-piece dresses, and some cover their stomach with belly stockings. In class, most people just wear comfy clothes or activewear. It’s completely the individual’s choice!
If your class is still available, you can still join up until week 3.
Activewear or comfy clothing that’s easy to move in are best for class. In Oriental dance we usually dance barefoot, so socks or dance shoes for jazz or ballet are good options for your feet. You can bring your own hip scarf, or borrow one in the Intro courses.
No! Intro and beginner classes are designed for those who’ve never tried Oriental or any dance at all.
Adults of all ages and fitness levels are welcome in class. Many people suggest that they’re too “uncoordinated” to try dance, but that’s not true! Dance classes are a great way to improve coordination!
There are sometimes free come and try sessions before a new term starts, or there may be trial sessions available to book through the website bookings page for full term (10 weeks) classes. However, it can be hard to get a real taste for the style in one hour, and often the very first class can feel a little overwhelming. That’s why the Intro to Oriental course, available a few times per year, is only 5 weeks. This allows you to get a real feel for the dance but for a shorter commitment.
